I'm Derek, a Cambridge-qualified English teacher from Scotland,
living in Madrid.
But I had to learn Spanish the hard way:
As the only non-native in my social circle, contributing to conversations in the early years felt like entering a Formula 1 race on a bicycle.
And then there was the time I had a job interview in Spanish,
where the pressure made my vocabulary magically disappear!
That's why My English Habit Speaking Sessions are built on speaking quantity, and the perfect level of challenge for the fastest progress.
So you can join the conversation much sooner than I did.

What learners say about working with me
My presentation yesterday went very well.
Of course, it was stressful in front of 40 people, but I did extremely well. Our lessons helped me a lot to approach this challenge with confidence.
Gaëtan Cailleaud
In my interview last week, for the first time I wasn't nervous. With Derek I can speak and hold a conversation, so why not with another person in English?
América Bueno Gomez
At first I was totally afraid. We had to answer super fast with no time. But it was fun, and I was surprised at how well I could speak under pressure.
Buddy Mangas after his first public speaking session
Words came more easily, and I needed less time to make up my mind. The exercise where you only have 5 seconds to explain something really helps.

What level do I need?
-
+
Intermediate or above. If you can read English and understand some of what you hear, you're ready for the Intermediate sessions.
Each session has a recommended minimum level, so you’re always speaking with people around your level, or just a little above it. That’s the Stretch Zone, and it’s where progress is fastest.
What if I can't attend at the times on the calendar?
-
+
Tell us which times work best for you. We hold regular polls in the community to choose the best times, and we’ll add more sessions as more members join. Until then, you can come to whichever sessions fit your week.
Do I need to prepare anything?
-
+
Nope. But it does help if you are in a quiet location during the session and that your microphone and camera work well.
I’ve never had a conversation in English. Is this for me?
-
+
If you can read English and understand some of what you hear, yes. That’s exactly why the first week is free: come to a session and see for yourself.
Just so you know, these sessions aren’t for beginners, and there’s no course or textbook to follow. It’s real conversation, with help when you need it.
How many people are in the groups?
-
+
We're just getting started, so groups are small right now. When more than three people join, you'll spend most of the session in pairs or small groups, which gives you as much speaking time as possible.
Why group sessions instead of one-to-one classes?
-
+
One-to-one classes are great for building your general speaking ability, but they only prepare you for one speaking situation in a safe and comfortable way.
Real-life speaking is often much more unpredictable and higher-pressure. Under stress, our speaking performance can drop dramatically, and the only real way to improve this is to practise in similar situations.
Groups allow us to replicate real-life variety and pressure much more easily. Research also shows that learners can make excellent progress speaking with each other, which is something that I've experienced myself with my Chinese speaking skills.
And because the groups are small, or split into pairs, you still speak far more than in a typical group class.
